Gil's Bio

Although I’ve never lived in Louisiana, I do enjoy visiting. I remember as a kid, my family was travelling along near where I-10 is currently built. I think that was 1962, or was that 1692? No, I think I got it right the first time...I’m not THAT old. We stopped at a drive-thru hamburger joint in Baton Rouge and the hamburgers were 10 for $1บบ. I do remember that we loaded up on them. Ahhh...my first memories of Louisiana. I had just turned eight.

More recently, I’d driven through Louisiana for the first time as an adult in 1996. My destination was Phoenix. At the time, I was living in North Carolina and had driven I-40 a number of times and needed a change of pace on the long trip. So, I decided to take the southern route, along I-20. The one major city that I did go through in Louisiana was Shreveport, an impressive looking city. Or at least it was nice looking from the freeway. I’ve been on that route several times now, including a trip with my former travel trailer in 1997 in which I finally ended up moving away from North Carolina (after 2 years) to Albuquerque, New Mexico (if you don’t count my four month layover in Phoenix).. I didn’t even have to take a right! (from Bugs Bunny cartoon fame).

In September 2000, I decided to take a 3 week vacation. It started from Albuquerque, went up to Ohio (very nice!), down to Southern Louisiana, where I stayed in Morgan City for six days. I used that as my jumping-off point to see a lot of sights, trying new types of food (alligator tail is REALLY GOOD!). I managed to get totally plastered in the French Quarter of New Orleans (I used better judgement the next trips out there, and I had a four drink limit!). My tour guide on these fiascos (at times) was Jay Barrymore. He really knew about the state. In his job at the time, he had a lot of free time to read about things and gets caught up on the history and odd facts about the area. Finally off to Phoenix for a few days. After a five-thousand mile drive and two and a half weeks later, I was back home. Believe me, I needed a vacation after my vacation.

Since then, I’ve been to or through Louisiana a number of times ...the most memorable was in October, 2002, when I helped Jay move out here to Albuquerque. He was jobless and had been for a few months. Money was a problem for him, so he HAD to move from Morgan City for better opportunities to make a living. He found a job here rather quickly and is still working, yes, at the same place as of the date of the last site update. Not at the same job he had when he moved out here, but he’s enjoying his job for the State of New Mexico.

If you would like to contact me personally, you can do it by email or snail-mail. I also have several other websites I work on, most of which are linked to from this site.
