Jackson Square Page 2

Besides interesting sites and scenes to see around the French Quarter, there are also interesting people to meet. This is Spiderman, one of the performing characters who can be found in and around the Vieux Carre. Always ready to take a picture, Spiderman can be found anywhere between the French Market, Jackson Square and Bourbon Street. Here, Spiderman is posing at Jackson Square.

The opulent entrance to the megalithic Harrah’s Casino at the foot of Canal Street near the ferry. Just inside the door is a tribute to Louis Armstrong. We managed to snap this picture just before Harrah’s security personnel let us know, in no uncertain terms, their policy against photography inside the establishment!

A horse-drawn street carriage (a favorite mode of transportation and tour guide entertainment for tourists) along Decatur St. in front of Jackson Square.

Fortune tellers, artists and performers fill the walk- ways surround Jackson Square hoping to make a passing tourist a customer. This scene is located near the entrance of the park in front of the cathedral.

A view down Chartres Street towards the CBD from in front of the Cabildo in Jackson Square.

These magnificent building flanking two sides of Jackson Square along St. Peter and St. Ann Streets represent possibly the oldest apartment buildings and townhouses ever built in the United States. The structures were built by Baroness Micaela Almonester Pontalba at about 1855. When these apartments were built, the French Quarter was dying commercially, with businesses moving out to above Canal Street.  This is believed to be the first attempt at urban renewal.

Dear Guests: We have worked very hard on this site in hopes that it will educate, inform, and entertain. All donations are appreciated, once we get our tip jar back up, but if you can’t do that, please donate a little of your time to signing the guestbook below and let us know what you think. As always, we appreciate your comments. Thanks, Gil Davis -- Jay Barrymore
