Street Car Tour

I had never been on a streetcar before. I’ve been to San Diego and Los Angeles and ridden on the modern track-based trolly systems there. But if you’re going to visit “The Big Easy,” let me tell you, there’s no way you’ll want to miss the streecars. Even though they’re a bit noisy and the seats are hard, you’ll get a view of some of the more historic parts of New Orleans, and you don’t have to drive (sorry folks, some of the streets in New Orleans leave a lot to be desired!). For around a buck a person each direction, it’s a great way to relax for an hour or more, and see some of the many sights New Orleans has to offer.

People waiting along the St. Charles Ave. streetcar line. This shot was taken through the window of a streetcar.

An ‘over-the-shoulder’ view of what a streetcar driver sees along St. Charles Ave.  The streetcars are operated by the city’s Regional Transit Agency (RTA), with the St. Charles line being over 150 years old. Each street car comes complete with brass fittings and reversible mahogany seats. The famous ‘Streetcar named Desire’ no longer exists and has been replaced by a bus (named ‘Desire’).

Here is a photo taken from the front to the rear of the streetcar. At the rear of the streetcar is another set of controls. When the streetcar reaches the end of the line, it switches tracks, and the far end that you see here then becomes the front. The seats are flipped in the other direction so the passengers may once again face forward.

Dear Guests: We have worked very hard on this site in hopes that it will educate, inform, and entertain. All donations are appreciated, once we get our tip jar back up, but if you can’t do that, please donate a little of your time to signing the guestbook below and let us know what you think. As always, we appreciate your comments. Thanks, Gil Davis -- Jay Barrymore
